Microsoft has just released a new Microsoft Edge Dev update as the company prepares to promote version 91 to the beta channel.

Microsoft Edge is the best browser for shopping. Let Microsoft Edge help you find great prices with built-in tools that save you time, energy, and money.

In other words, this is the final build that the company ships as part of Edge version 91 to Dev users, though small patches could still land in the coming days. But on the other hand, nothing big would change, so this is very likely to be the final feature lineup scheduled to go live in the beta channel rather sooner than later.

Microsoft Edge Dev build 91.0.864.1 therefore doesn’t bring too many big changes, though it includes an option to prompt before closing a window with multiple tabs open in an attempt to prevent accidental shutdowns of the browser.

Edge 91 due to launch in late May

This is something that should have been there from the very beginning, to be honest, as I mistakenly closed the browser several times before and then had to recover the entire session after launching Edge one more time. And of course, it’s a feature that’s already available in most other browsers out there.

  2. Today kicks off Microsoft Build 2019, and with it, lots of exciting announcements for the next version of Microsoft Edge! Less than a month ago, we shipped our first Dev and Canary channel preview builds of the next version of Microsoft Edge, built on the Chromium open-source project.

Then, Microsoft Edge Dev build 91.0.864.1 adds the ability to clear Media Foundation data on demand, and the company says it’s also working on a new option to do the same thing when closing the browser.

There’s also a new option to print documents at their actual size or to fit them to the page, as well as a management policy to enable Math Solver.

All in all, this is just a small release before Microsoft Edge 91 makes its way to the beta channel. According to the official release schedule, Edge 91 should reach the beta channel in the week of April 27, so we’re only a few days away from this moment. The public launch for production devices of Edge 91 is due to happen in the week of May 27.

Microsoft is testing out a new performance mode for its Edge browser. The new mode is available to some testers using the Microsoft Edge Canary version of the browser, and others can enable it manually with a flag. “Performance mode helps you optimize speed, responsiveness, memory, CPU and battery usage,” says Microsoft. “Performance improvements might vary depending on your individual specifications and browser habits.”

It’s not clear exactly how the performance mode changes Edge, but it does affect the Sleeping Tabs feature. If you enable performance mode then the Sleeping Tabs timeout will be locked to five minutes. Microsoft introduced sleeping tabs in Edge earlier this year, allowing the browser to automatically release system resources for inactive tabs when you have a number of tabs open, which helps new tabs run better or stop the browser from hogging memory and CPU resources in the background.

Performance mode in Edge will likely prove most useful for laptop users, as browsers can often have a big impact on battery life. Google has also been working on improving Chrome performance and battery usage over the past six months. An update in November significantly improved CPU usage, and an update earlier this year improved RAM and GPU usage.
